PhD: Modelling the impacts of climate change on European sheep and goat systems, SRUC and University of Edinburgh
Oct 2016 - present, Edinburgh, UK
My PhD focuses on the impacts of changes in atomospheric CO2 concentrations, elevated temperature and changes in water availability on sheep and goat systems throughout Europe. So far I have concentrated on the impacts of climate change on the yield and nutritional quality of European pastures. I am planning to model the expected changes to different pasture types for various climate change scenarios. This will lead to work on how small ruminant offtake is expected to change and whether livestock will be able to meet their feed requirements on future pastures. This will culminate in looking at how small ruminant breeding goals could be altered to enable the breeding of animals which are better adapted to future climates. This work is part of the iSAGE initiative and is funded by Horizon 2020.
